Big Ben Is just one Of a Kind

When it arrives to quarterbacks, Ben Roethlisberger stands alone.

It's not that he's the league's most effective quarterback--that name falls to Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. But in relation to getting successful while getting sacked, Roethlisberger's skills are pretty unique.

In a brand new article over at Football Outsiders, Stuart Fraser factors out that Roethlisberger's stats will be the best they've found for just about any quarterback who gets sacked on 10 % or much more of his pass attempts. Now Football Outsiders' stats only go back again to 1995, but over that time, it's been relatively unusual to locate a quarterback who is even common while getting that many hits. Roethlisberger isn't just above-average, in 2007 he was amid the league's most effective in spite of running for his life.

As we've pointed out about a thousand instances right here over the past few of years, the Steelers offensive line has gotten leakier and leakier, which explains why Roethlisberger experienced his worst sack percentage of his occupation final year. large Ben can be partly to blame for the numbers, as he holds onto the ball extended than just about anybody in hopes of making plays downfield. But FO found a thing surprising--Roethlisberger's stats seem to decline when he gets sacked less.

Fraser makes the argument that a few of individuals sacks retain Roethlisberger from getting risky shots downfield late. receiving seen too many instances where Roethlisberger has gone deep into double coverage, I'm inclined to concur with that assesment. But over the long phrase the Steelers desperately demand to acquire large Ben some line help to begin slowing reducing the pass rush. Hopefully subsequent thirty day period they'll go a long way toward making specific that Roethlisberger will by no shows be sacked on 10 % of his attempts again.
